According to many, the game was first invented in Italy by a gambler Felix Falguiere, where it acquired the Italian name 'baccara', meaning zero in English. It's been suggested that the game was first played with a deck of Tarot cards in the middle ages. It was later on introduced in France around 1490 A.D. and remained an exclusive game to the French nobility for some time before becoming a casino game. The basis of this game is very similar, but the rules and payoffs are much less
dramatic. The Baccarat we know today originated in Great Britain and was then passed along to South America and finally to Nevada. Baccarat has a history overseas too, which is evidenced by its popularity among the Asian population who visit Las Vegas each year. A number of casinos have installed a smaller version of the baccarat game played on standard blackjack-sized gaming tables. The table is staffed by only one dealer who is responsible for handling the cards. Mini-Baccarat
- although the odds are good, you're playing faster, and the more hands per hour, the more you'll lose. You can bet on either hand to win. The low 1.06% edge includes the 5% commission you have to pay on winning Banker bets.
You can bet that there will be a tie between Banker and Player, but this carries a whopping 14.4% house
edge. In regular Baccarat each player gets a turn to deal the cards. A 9 is an automatic win unless the other side has 9, which is a tie. For Player hands, the player hits on 0-5, and stands on 6-9.
Remember that 8 & 9 are usually automatic wins. Most games with a low edge require you to learn some strategy; in Baccarat, you get the some low edge no matter what, because the only decisions you make are how much to bet and which of the two low-edge hands you want to bet on, Player or Banker.
The casino takes a 5% commission on winning hands when you bet on Banker. The dealers keep track of this and you pay the commission when you cash out at the end of your session.
Betting on Banker has a lower house edge, because the Banker hand is much more likely to win against the Player
hand. Try to play Baccarat at crowded tables, because that slows down the play. At the start of the game, the Player and Banker hands are each dealt two
cards. If the score of either hand totals 8 or 9, the game is over and no
further cards are dealt to either hand. 10, Jack,
Queen, and King count as 0.
